I am Legend
“Robert Neville is the last living man on earth … but he is not alone. Every other man, woman and child on the planet has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for Neville’s blood. By day he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn. How long can one man survive like this?”
This is the first fictional book I have bought since leaving primary school. After seeing the trailer for the upcoming Hollywood take on this 1954 novel, I thought I would try getting back in to reading. The reviews of the book have been pretty good, although I am yet to really sink my teeth in to it after the first 30 pages or so.
The story is about one man, Robert Neville, who appears to be the only man in New York who hasn’t turned in to a flesh eating zombie and his struggle to fight them off. Personally I think it would be a cake walk… I mean they only come out at night and don’t seem to be too forceful when it comes to attempted breaking and entering.
Will report more when I am finished, or just before the movie comes out, whichever comes first.
Finished!
Well by and large I was pretty pleased with this take on this tale of isolated terror in a world of vampires. The story did take a little while to get going and by and large, not all that much seemed to happen. I was pleased to see that steps were taken in the story to try to explain the events that unfolded, and that the book covered an extended period of time that gave the setting more credibility and depth. I was a little bemused by the ending - a twist in the tale that seemed to be wrapped up in no more than a dozen pages. It’s always hard to review a book without giving away any spoilers. I also find it it hard to recommend this title to another reader because I simply don’t have enough experience to compare this to the vast range of other fiction out there, or to whose taste this book might appeal to. I for one though, enjoyed it. Bring on the movie.
